Fun with friends

Yesterday we had a Cinco de Mayo salsa eating party with some friends at our house. After making salsa a few weeks ago, Mike desperately wanted to make MORE and eat MORE with friends, so he got the idea to invite people over to help us get into the new Texas flava.

While we were eating, one of our friends got curious, "what exactly IS cinco de mayo?" So we looked it up on someone's cell phone... it is actually pretty funny. At some point in the 1800's, Mexico decided to stop paying the interest on their loans from France. France decided to take it out of their hides instead, apparently, so a war ensued. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the day the delinquent Mexican nation defeated their creditors in battle (mostly because their creditors forgot that they were using the French military to wage war). And now it is celebrated mostly in the US by those of Mexican decent to celebrate their heritage (...a heritage some people term "rich." haha...). One of our friends wondered out loud why it was that we celebrate it in America, but they don't in Mexico. The answer is simple: they get to eat mexican food everyday. We need a good excuse.
Friends we will misso mucho

Robby was walking around eating food off of any plate that was left unattended

We provided the chips, drinks, and two kinds of salsa, and had everyone else bring a dip/salsa to share, as well.

This fruit salsa was amazing, I found the recipe on allrecipes.com. Telitha brought some really good homemade ice cream to share, and when combined with the cinnamon chips and fruit salsa, it was like heaven on earth!

Here's the spread: we had red bean & corn salsa, pineapple salsa, guacamole (it was gone before I could take a picture!), two kinds of regular tomato salsa, plus the fruit stuff. The Nelsons also brought some pizza to share.

Today we went with the Nelsons and Walthers out to a beach on Lake Erie. It was one of the things on my "must do before I leave Cleveland" list! We had a fun picnic, and the kids played in the sand and flew kites. Unfortunately we had to leave a little bit earlier than we would have liked because Megan started to feel cruddy and began to cough really badly, so we got home and gave her some albuterol.
Jonah... I mean, Nolan, swallowed alive a Shark tent. Both of the other families had identical shark tents... I was starting to feel un-cool! "But mom... all the other kids' families have shark tents..."

Megan wanted to know if the beach at Lake Erie would be like Blizzard Beach at Disney World.

I love how I caught this picture of Elisa taking something from her little sister and making her cry. :-)

Can't make me jealous this time! I just made salsa on Tuesday to bring to pre-school today for the "International Brunch"! And I still have some!!! Yummy! It's a sweet salsa.
Also, to repay you for your Graupple information I thought I'd let you know that Cinco De Mayo actually commemorates the battle at Puebla where the Mexicans were outnumbered and yet defeated a "gang" of French at one particular battle. This battle was a huge turning point in the war. It didn't actually finish/win the war... but it sent them on their way to freedom from France. So, its the day they celebrate for that. Most Mexicans don't even know that. But, I somehow ended up teaching Mexican history at the YMCA for a year! Haha!! So, unless that curriculum fails me...
... And you should have seen the look on my father-in-law's face when he tried to tell me one Cinco De Mayo that today was Mexican Independence day and I explained all this to him. He actually called the waiter (at a Mexican restaurant) over to confirm.
