More of the story

I have more fun stuff to share about the whole car saga! Weeee!

The next morning Mike called the claims adjuster for our insurance company to give his recorded statement. When he did so, the adjuster told Mike some of what the perp had told him. According to the perp's rendition, they had been driving down a two lane road (as in, two in each direction), and Mike turned right from the left lane and hit the perp. Okay, if that is how it had happened, of course that would've been Mike's fault. So Mike quickly pointed out that it was NOT a two lane street, but a single lane residential street. So the adjuster pulled up google maps to verify and goes, "oh geez. On a street like that there is never a reason to pass, period."

Apparently, the perp also told our insurance company that he had insurance, but under company Y, not company X as he had told Mike. So then we began thinking, "hmm, maybe we judged him too harshly. He just misspoke because he used to have company X." He still had never called Mike to give him the info, but maybe he was just avoiding dealing directly with the other party, which isn't a bad idea in these situations. Anyway, my heart was beginning to soften a little for poor the perp, because I could see how from his perspective and understanding, it really was not his fault.

And then the claims adjuster called back. She had been trying to run down the perp's policy with insurance company Y, and found that they didn't insure him either! All my pity and understanding... whoop! Straight out the window. Now it is clear what this guy is... a liar! Oh, and an idiot. He still really thought Mike was at fault, and thought that if he fudged the details a little and made up an insurance company that no one would check his story that no one would bat an eye and automatically find in his favor.

So Mike went back to the police precicnt where he filed his initial report and talked to the officer and added the detail that the perp was an uninsured driver. The officer told him that meant an automatic suspended license for the perp. He also said that as these things go, our insurance company would probably sue the perp for the costs they had to shell out because he wasn't covered. And no one is going to be paying to fix the perp's ride. Man, it's hard being the perp right about now! One day he's just cruising around too fast down a quiet residential street that he has no business even driving on, and the next minute he's in a whole heap of legal and financial trouble.

Things still haven't been 100% settled that the insurance company will find in our favor but given 1) that the police report finds Mike at zero fault, 2)the perp has no insurance company to fight in his corner for him, and 3) the perp has now been caught lying by the insurance company, we are feeling pretty secure about the whole deal. Mike's only worry now is that the perp is going to be really ticked off at him, and come try and cause some havoc because he knows where we live. That possibility is extremely remote, but in any case the officer Mike spoke with gave us some good advice as to how to deal if that situation arose, so we feel pretty prepared.

So, moral of the story? Don't drive like an idiot! Don't pass on the right! Carry the state minimum car insurance! Wow, I think most ten-year-olds already know these life lessons. What's the perp's problem?

Glad you're having to deal with the perp and not me! I absolutely hate having to deal with the insurance companies. Hopefully the perp has learned his lesson.

We've had an experience sorta like that... the whole insurance thing... luckily the cops came right when someone called, and crazy enough there was alcohol in the car and a fishy man that suddenly disappeared when the cops were called... it makes life a little more interesting and a little more stressful

You should get a security system in case the guy comes around, since I'm not in town to kick his trash...I suggest a shotgun, Mike would like that approach.
